INCORPORATING OLDER ADULTS

“For the first time in Canadian history, people over the age of 65 outnumber those under the age of 15. This is expected to place additional pressure on Canada’s health care system due to age-related and chronic diseases. At the same time, there is widespread acceptance of the positive impact that physical activity and social inclusion can have on overall health. As a result, governments and organizations across the country are taking steps to actively engage older adults in physical activity.” (HIGH FIVE, n.d.)

As a provincial sport organization, we are committed to fostering and promoting diversity, inclusion, and access to gymnastics within our member clubs. We aim to accomplish this through increasing the number of people from diverse and under-served populations participating in our sport.

We have compiled a list of education and training opportunities, resources, funding, and contacts in regard to incorporating older adults into sport programming, from organizations such as HIGH FIVE, SPRA, and the Saskatchewan Seniors Fitness Association to name a few. If you are looking to better reach the demographic of older adults in your club, this is a great place to start!
