INDIGENOUS SPORT DEVELOPMENT

“Sport means different things to different Indigenous peoples and groups. For many Indigenous peoples, the primary purpose of sport is to build self-esteem among youth. Sport and activity give youth a sense of purpose and direction, and, in some cases, helps them to engage in more appropriate activity during their free time while they find their way in the world. In the Truth and Reconciliation Report (2015), sport and recreation are identified as tools for social development to improve the health and well-being of individuals and communities.” (Sport for Life, 2021)

As a provincial sport organization, we are committed to fostering and promoting diversity, inclusion, and access to gymnastics within our member clubs. We will accomplish this through increasing the number of people from diverse and under-served populations participating in our sport.

We have compiled a list of education and training opportunities, resources, funding, and contacts in regard to Indigenous Sport Development, from organizations such as the NCCP, Sport for Life, SPRA, the Aboriginal Sport Circle, and the Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations to name a few. If you are looking to better reach Indigenous populations and incorporate Indigenous values, this is a great starting point!
