REACHING NEW CANADIANS THROUGH SPORT

“Research shows that individuals who have recently immigrated to Canada turn to sport and physical activity for many reasons, including expanding one’s social network, improving health and wellness, and integrating into Canadian society. We need to think critically about how to address known participation barriers faced by newcomers (e.g., cost, transportation, language barriers, lack of knowledge about Canadian sport and physical activity, bureaucratic registration processes) to make sport more representative of Canada’s rich ethno-racial diversity.” (SIRC, 2021)

As a provincial sport organization, we are committed to fostering and promoting diversity, inclusion, and access to gymnastics within our member clubs. We aim to accomplish this through increasing the number of people from diverse and under-served populations participating in our sport.

We have compiled a list of education and training opportunities, resources, funding, and contacts in regard to Reaching New Canadians Through Sport, from organizations such as Sport for Life, Open Door Society, and Inclusion Incorporated to name a few. If you are looking to reach more diverse populations and reduce barriers to participation amongst these populations, this is a great place to start!
