NOVEMBER 2021 RECAP

What a whirlwind of a month November was for our Saskatchewan athletes! We had so many events take place that we thought it was a good time to recap what happened.

Early in November the Women’s Artistic Sask First Team was named. Four athletes were selected to Tier 1 and nine athletes were selected to Tier 2, from Marian, Can-Am, Gymnastics Adventure and Queen City Gymnastics. The Trampoline and Tumbling Sask First Team was also named shortly after with three athletes being named to the Provincial Team and 12 athletes being named to the National Team from T & T Adventure and Can-Am. Congratulations everyone!

November was the busiest month in regards to competitions in a while. For the first time since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic we had Saskatchewan athletes travel to in person competitions.

First up we had Rylee Miller and her coach Leigh Stoddart head off to Gympies Gymnova Cup in Keerbergen, Belgium. This was Rylee’s second time representing Canada at an international event and her first in person competition in almost two years. Rylee competed bars and floor and placed 6th and 8th respectively.

Amy Jorgensen was selected as part of the Gymnastics Canada Junior National Team to attend not one but TWO international competitions. Amy along with her coach Chris Baraniuk left for the Tournoi International in Combs-la-Ville France on November 16th. Amy was part of a team with two other gymnasts from Canada where they placed 4th in the team competition just missing the podium by .200. Individually Amy was the highest ranked Canadian in the All Around competition where she placed 7th. Marie Millette also had the opportunity to travel to the Tournoi International with Marian where she placed 18th All Around in her first international event and was the 2nd alternate for beam finals.

Once Amy & Chris were done in France, they jetted off to the Top Gym Competition in Charleroi, Belgium on November 22nd. Amy and her teammate Jenna Lalonde (from Ottawa Gymnastics Centre) both competed very well. Amy placed 4th All Around and was able to qualify for both beam and floor finals the next day. On day two of the competition, Amy placed 4th on floor and secured the silver medal on beam!

Up next both Amy and Rylee will be heading to the National Team training camp in Montreal in December.

Turning to Trampoline and Tumbling we had two Saskatchewan athletes qualify for the World Age Group Competition in Baku, Azerbaijan. Ashley Anaka from Can-Am and Hannah Metheral from T & T Adventure along with coach Danni Roy were selected to Team Canada. Ashley and Hannah both competed in Double Mini and Trampoline at this event. On Double Mini Ashley placed 11th just missing out on finals by a fraction, while Hannah placed 5th. Both Ashley and Hannah were able to compete in trampoline on day two of the competition, but it just wasn’t their day, and neither qualified for finals.

Back at home the Men’s Artistic gymnasts were finally able to compete in the 2021 virtual Gymnastics Canada Canadian Championships where video recording took place Nov 1-23. Final results will be available shortly. Our men’s Sask First program was able to host its talent ID in Saskatoon on November 27 and the Men’s Sask First Team will be announced in the coming days. Gym Sask women’s artistic athletes also started their virtual trials to the 2022 Saskatchewan Winter Games on November 27th with District Teams being announced the week of December 20th!

Gymnastics Saskatchewan would like to congratulate our athletes and coaches on an outstanding month of November! We are so proud of every athlete and coach who participated in Sask First talent ID, Gymnastics Canada & Gymnastics Saskatchewan virtual competitions and those who were finally able to travel to in person events. You made Saskatchewan proud.
